nATURALISTIC SKIN TONES IN OIL

Instructed by ERNEST VINCENT WOOD, III

1-Day Workshop

Sunday, July 26, 2026

9:00 AM – 4:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Cultural Centre
705 N Illinois St.
Indianapolis, IN 46204

Skin tones are often one of the most intimidating aspects of oil painting, but they become much easier to understand when approached through observation and a clear understanding of color. In this one day workshop with oil painter Ernest Vincent Wood III, students will learn a practical method for mixing and painting a wide range of naturalistic skin tones using a limited palette. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and painting practice, participants will gain confidence in seeing and interpreting the subtle color relationships that bring portraits to life.

Designed for painters of all skill levels, this workshop focuses on the essential principles behind successful painting rather than prescribed methods, giving students a practical framework for understanding and painting what they see.  Students will leave with a stronger understanding of color, a more effective approach to paint application, and a set of tools they can apply to portrait painting long after the class is over.
